1967 Camaro Z28 HISTORY: In November of 1967 Chevrolet previewed the Z28 Camaro to the press. The car was deceptive, it had no Z28 emblems and Chevrolet did very little promotion of the car. However, under the hood Chevrolet engineers did themselves proud with a high-reving 302 cubic inch engine that was actually a destroked 327. The engine was built to qualify the Camaro for the Trans Am racing series, which to that time was dominated by Mustangs. Internals of the engine were almost full racing components, with a forged steel crankshaft, 11:1 compression heads, and an 800 CFM Holley carburetor. The engine was capable of 7500 rpm, and was rated laughingly low at only 290 horsepower for insurance reasons, but with open headers and minor tuning could put out close to 400 hp . Only 602 Z28s were produced in 1967, the fewest of any model year. It is unknown how many are left - but a good indication of the rarity of this car is the simple fact that you almost never see a 1967 Camaro Z28 listed for sale. The car seen here has been frame off restored to stock specifications using almost exclusively original NOS, number and date correct components, including a numbers matching drivetrain. |
