1970 LS-6 Chevelle HISTORY: The musclecar era reached its peak in 1970. In that year, virtually every Detroit auto maker was fully engaged in trying to produce the fastest accelerating, highest horsepower production car available. That year saw Detroit produced some of the fastest street cars ever offered for sale to the general public. One of the fastest of all was the renowned LS-6 Chevelle, which had a 454 cubic inch, 450 horsepower engine. No other engine in an intermediate car ever carried a higher horsepower rating, and in fact, the 450 hp rating was on the conservative side. Chevelles with these engines could easily run low 13 second quarter miles right off the dealer floor, and 12 second quarter mile times were reached with minor tweaks (like headers, street slicks). Most auto enthusiasts consider the LS-6 Chevelle as one of the top musclecars of all time, and the 1970 Chevelle body style is considered by the majority of Chevelle enthusiasts as the “best looking” Chevelle ever produced. The car seen here is a frame-off restored, documented LS-6 Chevelle. It has been judged as 997 out of 1000 points at the Chevy Winternationals, in both 2004 and 2005, where it won its class both years. It has also won its class in several Super Chevy shows. |
