1970 Mustang Mach I 428 Cobra Jet

HISTORY: Friday, April 17, 1964, was the official launch day for the Ford Mustang, one of the most eagerly awaited cars of all time. On that day crowds of people literally flocked to dealers due to the media blitz leading up to the debut. Four million people are reported to have visited their local Ford showrooms that first weekend and dealers couldn't get Mustangs fast enough, booking over 22,000 orders during the opening hours. The demand far exceeded expectations with 100,000 selling in the first four months. The car set an all-time record for first year sales of any model!

By 1969, the redesigned Mustang was longer and wider than previous models. It also boasted more power! Also, the Mach 1 was introduced and offered with the 351, 390 or 428, a stiffer suspension and was offered only as the Sportsroof (fastback). Manual drum brakes were standard with power front discs available. The 351 Mach 1's were the most popular by far with the 390 being the rarest because it didn't cost much more to step up to a lot more power with the 428. The 1970 Mustang had a few minor difference from the 1969 model.

The car seen here is a 65,000 mile, frame-off restored 1970 "Q code" Mach I, indicating the car came with a 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet engine. It is one of only 31 Mustangs made in 1970 with this car's paint and trim codes!
